IN THE STUDIO:
I am working on a new series called the Seed Sounds.
The root of this work goes back to when I was a little girl of four or five, and had my first spiritual awakening in my grandmother's garden. The rich warm red earth between my toes, the brilliant sunlight, the thick buttery Mississippi breeze, the sound of the birds and insects and the wind in the mulberry trees brought my little girl self into a new kind of self-awareness, in which the flowers, the earth, the universe and I were all one. There was no separation. That awareness has stayed with me and sustained me my whole life. As an artist and a teacher, I am always returning to that primordial experience and allowing it to unfold in new ways through my visual work, and in my work with individuals and community. In the Seed Sound pieces I’m returning in an abstract and formal way, painting the vibration I feel emanating from the sacred heart of the universe, the sound of continuous creation.
